The
gaited horse originally came from Europe soon after the New World
was discovered. Legend has it that prior to the construction of
roads, 80% of European horses had a lateral gait. Allegedly, these
horses were preferred by royalty and nobility because of their comfortable,
smooth ride. The gaited horse proved to be of great value to the
explorers and settlers because there were few trails or roads. The
need for a calm, reliable, sure-footed horse through the rugged
terrain was essential - and a smooth gait was a bonus! Through purposeful
breeding, and the natural breeding of feral herds, the gaited horse
proved to be an “easy keeper,” possessing extraordinary
durability and endurance . . . especially the Mountain Horses of
eastern Kentucky.
Gaited horses perform a “lateral gait”
which occurs between the walk and canter instead of a “diagonal
gait” known as the trot. The trot, a two-beat gait in which
the diagonal pairs of feet move together, creates a moment of suspension
and can be bouncy and uncomfortable. A gaited horse moves at the
gait (very fast walk) with only one foot off the ground at a time,
creating no suspension and thus a smooth and comfortable ride.
The gentle, people-oriented temperament of
the gaited mountain horses makes them enjoyable to train and ride.
They are naturally friendly, with a sweet disposition that promotes
a strong bond between horse and rider. At 8th Heaven Farms, we specifically
breed to encourage this temperament and natural ease, along with
a sure-footed gait.
